dirty dishes

During the week when I get home late and exhausted and wanting to make my work, I don’t clean up. By Friday I sometimes have a mountain of dirty dishes crowding my kitchen.

I’d like to think I’m above feeling like a bad person for not doing dishes, and I’ll quote Barbara Sher on housework any day (“If you don’t love doing it, stop”), but the truth is that it bugs me to see mess, and I feel like somehow I should do better.

This week I tried a new approach. Filthy dishes as still life.

Feeling better already.

Tell me about the little girl spoons (?)–Marie and Anne? History?

Oh, I didn’t realize (or maybe forgot?) that Betty Lou had friends!

I love those spoons. Marie and Annette are part of a set of 5, representing the Dionne quintuplets. They were born in Canada in the 30s or 40s I think, and at one time were the biggest tourist attraction in North America. They were kept in a “hospital” and paraded out into a playground every afternoon where the public could gawk at them. Very strange.

Ellen gave me the first spoon and I found the rest of the set on eBay. I think they were give-aways with Quaker cereal or some such product.

I remember reading about the Dionne quintuplets. They actually didn’t have very happy lives–probably because of all the parading and gawking. But I, too, love the spoons!

Just have to say that I love your blog. you are inspiring and grounding. you don’t display even a smidgen of pretension. Nice flatware, and thanks for tips on turning housework into art. And for aiding all the guilt ridden women (and men?) who turn away from their housework and into things they love to do.

yeah, what cracks me up, is how pretty your pile of dishes are, you simply can’t help making everything ordered and beautiful. It is so much you, it’s like breathing. I love that about you.
